What makes the Lizard unique is its geology. Serpentine is the most famous rock type formed at the Lizard. Serpentine is thought to have originated in the Earth’s mantle deep under an ocean that vanished when landmasses collided. When the igneous material was extruded into the ancient ocean, it was subjected to low-temperature. This involved its original minerals combining with water to form new minerals. The earliest beacon to guide mariners through the hazardous seas off Lizard Point was completed in 1619. In 1751 the Lighthouse was erected and structural alterations made in 1812 left the station looking much as it does today.
